Here is your October message!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">HOLD THE LADDER<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We live in a four-storey house in BC. I know a lot of people think I live in Qu\u00e9bec because of the accent, fair guess! However, my husband and I have lived in White Rock, just outside Vancouver, for 16 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our house has a rooftop deck where we keep our patio furniture. One day, it was VERY windy, and our patio umbrella suddenly took off. It flew into the air and got stuck between the roof and a tree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We couldn\u2019t reach it from the rooftop, so we had to go all the way down and borrow a ladder from our neighbour because, well, we don\u2019t own a ladder tall enough for a four-storey house!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our neighbour works in construction, so he had one of those huge, sturdy, industrial ladders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Of course, my husband Duff decided he was going up the ladder, and my job was simple:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hold the ladder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So there I was at the bottom, feeling rather useless, when our adorable two-and-a-half-year-old neighbour came over.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDuff! Duff!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then she started talking to me. Naturally, I got distracted and began interacting with her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Duff immediately went into panic mode.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat are you doing? You\u2019re supposed to be holding the ladder!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I looked at this massive industrial ladder and said, \u201cI\u2019m not really doing anything! This ladder is so sturdy. You\u2019re not going anywhere. You don\u2019t really need me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And he said something that stuck with me:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYeah, but it makes me feel so much better knowing that you\u2019re holding the ladder.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">THAT\u2019S WHAT WE DO AT CAPS!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That sentence made me think about my role as the President this year. The board is phenomenal, I am not really doing anything, they got this. I am there to hold the ladder for them and make sure they know I have their back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is also what we do for each other at CAPS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We hold the ladder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We\u2019re not climbing it for someone else. We\u2019re not doing the work for them. We\u2019re simply there, supporting them and letting them know that someone has their back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As a CAPS member, you can\u2019t expect other people to do everything for you. They\u2019re not going to find your speaking engagements for you, build your business for you, or do your website for you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But we can hold the ladder for one another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes, simply knowing someone is there makes it easier to keep climbing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s also a great analogy for leadership and for the people on your team. We don\u2019t have to do everything for them. Sometimes our role is simply to provide enough support and confidence for them to climb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">CAPS PAST PRESIDENTS\u2019 WISDOM<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This month, I\u2019d like to feature some wisdom from CAPS Past President Nabil Doss.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nabil told me something when I became President that stayed with me:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYour to-do list will grow exponentially this year.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You know those ribbons we get at Convention? Sometimes they get so long you could practically trip over them!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But Nabil reminded me that the most important thing isn\u2019t necessarily what\u2019s on your to-do list.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">YOU should be on your priority list.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nurture your family.<br>Nurture your friendships.<br>And nurture yourself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When we\u2019re under stress, we tend to focus on the first thing on the list and keep moving to the next task and the next one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So put yourself on that list.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Make sure you\u2019re taking care of your family, your friends and, importantly, yourself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s great advice for a CAPS President, but I think it applies equally well to all of us in our respective businesses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">JOIN THE CAPS NATIONAL BOARD<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s that time of year!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Call for Nominations for the CAPS National Board has already been sent by email, so make sure you check your inbox.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our National Board has 15 members this year, and now it\u2019s time to build the team that will work alongside our next National President, Denis Boudreau.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you\u2019re interested in joining the National Board, you have until October 8 to submit your nomination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you can\u2019t find the email, simply go here to access the nomination form.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.canadianspeakers.org\/nominations-for-2027-2028-caps-board-of-directors-appel-de-candidatures-au-conseil-dadministration\">https:\/\/www.canadianspeakers.org\/nominations-for-2027-2028-caps-board-of-directors-appel-de-candidatures-au-conseil-dadministration<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And one important thing to know:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is a working board.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Being on the National Board isn\u2019t about having a status or a title. We do stuff!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So if you\u2019re thinking of joining us, be prepared to roll up your sleeves, contribute, collaborate and help move CAPS forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The vote will take place at the AGM on December 1.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe this is your year to step up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And remember, &nbsp;you won\u2019t be climbing alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We\u2019ll be there to hold the ladder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">YOUR VOTE MATTERS<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Make sure you put the December 1 CAPS National AGM on your calendar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And if serving on the National Board isn\u2019t for you, there are plenty of opportunities to get involved at your local chapter instead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We recently held our Chapter Leadership Summit, and I hope you saw the posts featuring the incredible group of people who came together to learn, share and connect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Each CAPS chapter will also be holding its own AGM, and this is important because your Chapter<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Leadership Team doesn\u2019t simply decide, \u201cI\u2019m going to be President!\u201d or \u201cI\u2019m going to be on the CLT!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You, the members, vote for your Chapter Leadership Team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Make sure you attend your chapter AGM \u2014 or submit your vote if you can\u2019t be there \u2014 because you get to decide who will represent you and who will help organize the great activities and events happening in your region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WELCOME TO OUR NEW CAPS MEMBERS!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Let\u2019s give a warm CAPS welcome to our newest members!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We have two new Professional Members:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Shawn Saraga<br>Sarah Luther<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Welcome to CAPS!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We also have two new Associate Members:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Christie Gibson from Alberta<br>Shannon Hazel from our Virtual Chapter<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And did you know that\u2019s a thing?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can join CAPS even if you don\u2019t live close to one of our physical chapters. Je sais, beaucoup de gens pensent que j\u2019habite au Qu\u00e9bec \u00e0 cause de mon accent\u2026 C\u2019est quand m\u00eame une bonne supposition! Mais mon mari et moi habitons \u00e0 White Rock, tout pr\u00e8s de Vancouver, depuis maintenant 16 ans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nous avons une terrasse sur le toit o\u00f9 nous gardons nos meubles de patio. Un jour, il ventait VRAIMENT tr\u00e8s fort et notre parasol s\u2019est soudainement envol\u00e9. Il est parti dans les airs et s\u2019est retrouv\u00e9 coinc\u00e9 entre le toit et un arbre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Impossible de l\u2019atteindre \u00e0 partir de la terrasse. Nous avons donc d\u00fb redescendre et emprunter une \u00e9chelle \u00e0 notre voisin parce que, \u00e9videmment, nous n\u2019avons pas d\u2019\u00e9chelle assez haute pour une maison de quatre \u00e9tages!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Notre voisin travaille dans la construction, alors il avait une de ces \u00e9normes \u00e9chelles industrielles, hyper solides.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00c9videmment, mon mari Duff a d\u00e9cid\u00e9 que c\u2019\u00e9tait lui qui allait grimper, et mon r\u00f4le \u00e9tait tr\u00e8s simple :<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tenir l\u2019\u00e9chelle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Me voil\u00e0 donc en bas, \u00e0 me sentir plut\u00f4t inutile, quand notre adorable petite voisine de deux ans et demi arrive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00ab Duff! Duff! \u00bb<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Puis, elle commence \u00e0 me parler. \u00c9videmment, je me laisse distraire et je commence \u00e0 interagir avec elle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Duff passe imm\u00e9diatement en mode panique.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00ab Qu\u2019est-ce que tu fais? Tu es suppos\u00e9e tenir l\u2019\u00e9chelle! \u00bb<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Je regarde cette \u00e9norme \u00e9chelle industrielle et je lui r\u00e9ponds : \u00ab Mais je ne fais absolument rien! Cette \u00e9chelle est tellement solide. Tu ne vas nulle part. Tu n\u2019as m\u00eame pas vraiment besoin de moi. \u00bb<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Et l\u00e0, il m\u2019a dit quelque chose qui m\u2019est rest\u00e9 :<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00ab Oui, mais \u00e7a me rassure tellement de savoir que tu tiens l\u2019\u00e9chelle. \u00bb<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">C\u2019EST CE QU\u2019ON FAIT \u00c0 CAPS!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cette phrase m\u2019a fait r\u00e9fl\u00e9chir \u00e0 mon r\u00f4le de pr\u00e9sidente cette ann\u00e9e.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Notre conseil d\u2019administration est extraordinaire. Je n\u2019ai pas vraiment besoin de faire quoi que ce soit : ils assurent! Mon r\u00f4le est d\u2019\u00eatre l\u00e0 pour tenir l\u2019\u00e9chelle et m\u2019assurer qu\u2019ils savent que je suis l\u00e0 pour eux.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Et c\u2019est aussi ce que nous faisons les uns pour les autres \u00e0 CAPS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nous tenons l\u2019\u00e9chelle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nous ne grimpons pas \u00e0 la place de quelqu\u2019un d\u2019autre. Nous ne faisons pas le travail pour cette personne. Nous sommes simplement l\u00e0 pour la soutenir et lui faire savoir qu\u2019elle peut compter sur nous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">En tant que membre de CAPS, vous ne pouvez pas vous attendre \u00e0 ce que les autres fassent tout pour vous. Ils ne vont pas trouver vos contrats de conf\u00e9rences \u00e0 votre place, b\u00e2tir votre entreprise pour vous ou cr\u00e9er votre site Web.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mais nous pouvons tenir l\u2019\u00e9chelle les uns pour les autres.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Parfois, le simple fait de savoir que quelqu\u2019un est l\u00e0 nous aide \u00e0 continuer \u00e0 grimper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">C\u2019est aussi une excellente analogie pour le leadership et pour les gens qui font partie de votre \u00e9quipe. Nous n\u2019avons pas \u00e0 tout faire pour eux. Parfois, notre r\u00f4le consiste simplement \u00e0 leur offrir suffisamment de soutien et de confiance pour qu\u2019ils puissent grimper par eux-m\u00eames.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">LA SAGESSE DES ANCIENS PR\u00c9SIDENTS DE CAPS<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ce mois-ci, j\u2019aimerais partager avec vous un conseil de notre ancien pr\u00e9sident de CAPS, Nabil Doss.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lorsque je suis devenue pr\u00e9sidente, Nabil m\u2019a dit quelque chose que je n\u2019ai jamais oubli\u00e9 :<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00ab Ta liste de choses \u00e0 faire va s\u2019allonger de fa\u00e7on exponentielle cette ann\u00e9e. \u00bb<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Vous savez, tous ces rubans qu\u2019on accumule au congr\u00e8s?
