SUMMARY:Protecting Your Livelihood: Intellectual Property Law for Professional Speakers
DESCRIPTION:This month on CAPS Behind the Mic\, CAPS Member Norm Bowley and Marcus Gallie will take us through a high-level overview of intellectual property and related law\, then a drill-down into the major concerns of speakers in terms of protecting their copyright and trademarks\, and avoiding infringement on the property of others. We will conduct a tour d’horizon of the issues and provide practical insights both for protection and avoidance of infringing the rights of others. A high-level overview of intellectual property and related law\, then a drill-down into the major concerns of speakers in terms of protecting their copyright and trademarks\, and avoiding infringement on the rights of others. CAPS member Norm Bowley and former colleague IP specialist Marcus Gallie will conduct a tour d’horizon of the issues and provide practical insights both for protection and avoidance of infringing the rights of others. Q&A. \n \n  \n\n\n\n\nNorman Bowley \nNorm Bowley is a CAPS member who teaches primarily on professional excellence and communication. Norm practiced law in Ottawa from 1981 to 2018\, and before that was a teacher. Norm earned his JD (Cum Laude) from the University of Ottawa in 1979 and his Master of Laws from York University. Along the way he acquired his Trademark Agent designation\, as well as that of the Trust and Estate Professional. Norm does not profess to have the IP depth of Marcus\, but along his journey assisted in drafting some really interesting patents and litigated some pretty wild patent and copyright infringement cases\, including one which tangentially involved chasing cows through Saskatchewan mud.\n\n\n\nMarcus Gallie \nMarcus Gallie is an intellectual property lawyer practising in Ottawa. Called to the Bar in 1989\, he was also registered as a Patent Agent and as a Trademark Agent in 1992. He holds both an LLB and a Master of Law.  Prior to his legal career\, Marc obtained a B.Sc and an M.Sc. in the Environmental Science area. \nSince 2008\, he has been the Editor in Chief of the Canadian Patent Reporter\, roughly the legal equivalent of having your HoF and CSP. A member of the Intellectual Property Institute of Canada and the International Trademark Association\, he has also served on the Patent Agents Examination Board. He is considered one of the foremost IP lawyers in Canada and has extensively presented nationally and internationally. \nMarc was a Partner for over 20 years in one of Canada’s oldest Intellectual Property Practices until its acquisition by a publicly traded company in 2023.  He is now on gardening leave until he resumes practice in early spring.\n\n\n\n  \n  \n\n

You will learn why more content is not the answer and understand what AI is good for. Through a live demonstration Marc shows how AI is an asset and how it supports visibility\, preparation and outreach. AI is a “business support” resource tool. It’s not about replacing your voice or your expertise. You stay true to yourself. \nMarc is a professional speaker and a 7 year member of CAPS Alberta. Marc specializes in helping people turn good intentions to consistent action. He is known for his clear thinking\, clarity and humor\, helping speakers to stay relevant\, hireable and unmistakingly themselves. To that end Marc will share real solutions for speakers to get noticed\, get hired and stay consistent\, and show where AI apps fit\, and where they don’t. \n\n\nAlvin Law CSP\, HoF\, Author\n“Me and Mick Jagger; Our Impact Never gets Old” \nTakeaways: \n– Alvin will explain why Mick Jagger is an inspiration and perhaps “old” never gets old. \n– Alvin shares what he describes as “The Power of Impressions” to make a lasting impact. \n– Alvin will also just be “Alvin” and give us all a shot in the arm\, so to speak\, and inspire you to ignite your slumbering potential and “Step Into Greatness” \nAlvin began his professional speaking career 45 years ago and 25 years ago he joined CAPS. Imagine the knowledge gained by all that experience. Hence\, Alvin will share valuable “footnotes” about speech creation\, stagecraft\, and proven business practices gained from over 3\,500 presentations\, on five continents. His talks inspire you to focus on seeing the possibilities vs. focusing on what’s missing. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFOLLOWED BY A BONUS AFTERNOON SESSION:\nMarc Haine: Located in the Ballroom\, 1:15pm – 3:00 pm.\n“Shifting AI Insights into Action: Time to Go Beyond Your “Notes” \n\nCLICK HERE FOR A LOOK INTO WHAT IS PLANNED! \n\nMarc suggests “don’t leave with more notes” but leave with the confidence to take action on relevant AI nuggets. To that end\, Marc offers hands on\, in-depth insights to build your AI confidence and become an active user. Bring your laptop and learn how to apply current AI apps to your specific business and embrace a simple approach that reduces stress\, saves time\, and creates momentum. Marc reinforces that AI is a support tool\, not a shortcut or a replacement to your authenticity. By using your own laptop Marc offers a customized\, clear way forward by you applying ideas from his morning and afternoon presentation. Get something started: “Just Did It”. \n\nYour afternoon investment is $50. Marc will graciously donate the fee to CAPS Alberta.\nYou can pre-order a lunch from the lounge menu.

SUMMARY:The Successful Book Project - A Virtual Event!
DESCRIPTION:The Successful Book Project: A Play in Three Acts \nAct One – Imagination to Manuscript \nAct Two – Editing\, Designing\, Delivery \nAct Three – Releasing to the World \nActing roles to be filled: the Publisher\, the Editor\, the Author \nMost professional speakers understand the value of a well-written\, well-edited\, well-designed book as a support to their overall business. However\, bringing out a meaningful\, marketable\, readable book is not as easy as some would make it seem. \nTo ensure you deliver on a standing ovation\, it is essential to understand not only the roles involved in the play but the relationships between each character. Unlike a play upon a stage\, there is blurring between the ending of one act and the beginning of the next\, but all three acts of the play must be included in a successful book project. \nWhether you play the role of author\, publisher\, or editor (or all three)\, each role demands a specific mindset and completion of deliverables. \nIn this keynote\, learn the essentials of creating a meaningful\, marketable\, readable book that will support your speaking and your overall business model. \nDuring her 30-year career as a professional speaker on the topics of leadership and diversity\, Jeanne Martinson wrote more than a dozen books. In the past six years\, as Publisher of Wood Dragon Books\, she has assisted more than 45 authors bring over 70 books to the market. See more about her at www.wooddragonbooks.com

SUMMARY:Doors Wide Open: Get Ready for the Opportunities that Inclusion Creates
DESCRIPTION:You’ve crafted a brilliant talk — but who’s been unintentionally left in the lobby? \nAnd as you swing those doors open to welcome a broader audience\, \nis your self-care plan ready to keep up? \n\nThis interactive daytime session explores ability\, stability\, and the opportunities that can follow. You’ll learn how to expand your ideal audience by designing more inclusive presentations — and build a personalized plan to sustain your energy\, focus\, and performance as demand grows. \nFeaturing two superstars of the CAPS National board\, Denis Boudreau & Robin O’Grady have generously expanded their CAPS Toronto visit to offer a pair of afternoon sessions that wonderfully complement the evening’s planned programming: \nSession #1:  \nYour Average Audience Member Does Not Exist\n with Denis Boudreau (CAPS President Elect) \nMost speakers design their talks for an imagined “average” audience member. The problem is that this person rarely exists. In this interactive 60 minute workshop\, Denis Boudreau invites CAPS members and their guests to rethink who they design their talks for. Drawing from his 2023 book The Inclusive Speaker\, participants will examine how presentations can unintentionally exclude audience members with disabilities and explore practical ways to broaden the reach and impact of their message. \nSession #2:  \nYour Personal Performance Plan: Stress\, Energy & Results\n with Robin O’Grady (CAPS Chapter Liaison) \nSpeaking is a performance sport. Travel\, early mornings\, adrenaline\, long days\, and the pressure to “show up” can quietly drain your energy and focus. In this fast\, practical workshop\, you’ll build a simple plan using Robin’s Mind • Body • Soul framework\, so you know exactly what to do on travel days\, during heavy booking seasons\, and before/after high-stakes stages. \n  \nYour Chapter Leadership Team (CLT) have been working hard behind the scenes to continue developing this bold new era for CAPS Toronto — offering a packed schedule of events with just the right blend of personal connection and professional value. SUMMARY:The Next 25 - Future Proofing Your Speaking Business
DESCRIPTION:@ Buffal Crossing  – 2505 McGillivray Blvd.\,  Winnipeg\, MB \n \nThe Next 25 — Future Proofing Your Speaking Business brings together experienced voices from the profession for a practical\, forward-focused learning experience built specifically for professional speakers. This event explores the essential pillars of a sustainable speaking business: confidently setting and negotiating fees\, strengthening sales pipelines\, and understanding the signals your business sends to the marketplace every day. \nAttendees will gain insight into positioning their value\, improving conversion and follow-up strategies\, and making intentional decisions that support long-term relevance and impact. Whether you are building momentum or refining an established career\, this event offers perspective\, tools\, and professional dialogue to help you move forward with clarity. \nJoin fellow speakers for an engaging day of insight\, reflection\, and business-building strategy — and take a thoughtful step toward shaping the next chapter of your speaking journey. \nMaster Your Fees For the Future \nWith Brian Lee CSP\, HoF \n“ In business as in life\, you don’t get what you deserve\, you get what you negotiate.” \n– Chester L. Karrass \nMission: \nHow to Set and Negotiate Your Fees To Win More Business Every Time! \nYou will learn how to: \n\nUnlock the mystery of how to set and get fees you may not think you deserve\, but will absolutely appreciate at the end of every month.\nLearn ‘what to say’ and ‘how to say it’ when potential clients are hesitant or balk at your fees.\nCreate a successful retirement income strategy\, before you even begin.\nNegotiate like a pro with the toughest\, most seasoned meeting planner\, and achieve a win-win outcome every time.\n\n\nGet compensated 41 different ways\, even when your client has no money or no budget.\n\n\nDesign a speaker/consultant contract and invoice template that can be completed and sent in 6 minutes flat.\n\n\nSet and achieve goals to increase your income every year\, year after year.\nCreate your own fee schedule that your clients will never see.\nGet answers to questions you were afraid or embarrassed to ask\, with enthusiasm!\n\n The Next 25: The Signal Your Speaking Business Is Sending \nCodi Shewan \nEvery speaking business sends a signal. \nThrough how you show up. \nThrough how accessible you are. \nThrough the work you accept\, the boundaries you set\, and the way clients experience you\, on stage and off. \nIn this reflective\, example driven session\, Codi Shewan invites speakers to step back and examine the signal their business is quietly sending today\, and what that signal is shaping for the next 25 years. \nDesigned as a guided audit rather than a workshop\, this session blends real world business insight with live demonstration of speaker craft. Attendees will be invited to observe\, reflect\, and think differently about how everyday decisions\, from office days to on stage moments\, train expectations\, influence reputation\, and future proof a speaking business over time. \nThis session is intentionally light in participation and heavy in insight. There is no pressure to share\, perform\, or fix anything in the room. Instead\, speakers will leave with greater clarity around how their business operates as a living message\, and how small\, intentional shifts can compound into long term relevance\, sustainability\, and impact. \nBecause legacy in the speaking profession is not built in grand gestures. \nIt is built in the signals we send\, every day. \nIn this session\, speakers will leave with greater clarity around: \n\nHow their speaking business is constantly sending signals\, often in ways they may not have intended\nHow everyday decisions\, both visible and behind the scenes\, shape expectations\, reputation\, and long term sustainability\nHow small\, intentional shifts in how they show up can compound into a business that remains relevant\, resilient\, and meaningful over time\n\nSELLING! THINK Yourself® A SALES PRO \nwith Nathalie Plamondon-Thomas\, CSP \nMost speakers’ dream is to simply show up on the platform without having to do the sales pitch. Wouldn’t that be nice? You’ve got the “speaking” part down\, but sometimes you’d rather drill holes in your feet than have to “sell” your services. \nYour message matters. You can truly change the world. But securing paid speaking engagements is what really makes you a professional speaker. Discover the sales strategies\, pipeline techniques\, CRM funnels\, follow-up systems\, and mindset shifts Nathalie used to elevate her speaking business into the High-Income Earners Group. You will also discover the five types of imposter syndrome voices – and learn how to transform them – along with brain science insights on how to read your client’s mind and confidently close the sale. \nGet ready to fill your calendar and propel your speaking business. \nABOUT OUR SPEAKERS \nBRIAN LEE\, CSP\, HoF  \nThere are six reasons you’ll want to lean in and listen to today’s first speaker. \n#1 Brian Lee founded Custom Learning Systems 41 years ago.
