CAPS Foundation: Is Your Summer Slipping Away From You?
By FREMA ENGEL, MSW, Mental Health Expert, Psychotherapist and Chair of CAPS Peer Support Program Before you know it, summer will be over. Have you taken a break? Are you using the hot weather, school vacation and family and friends being more available as a chance for gatherings and fun activities? Many people see the slowdown in business and more relaxed, slower pace as a great opportunity to network, go after more business or work on marketing materials, write an article, or catch up on the 101 ideas they haven’t had time for during their busy months. It’s true that summer may be a great opportunity for this. But summer is also a great time to enjoy life … the long days and slower pace mean there’s more time to spend with your children, partner, family members and friends. The value o ...
President’s Message: Contribute. Consume. Co-Create – July 2016
We Are One. I know, you’ve heard that from me before. You’ve also heard me reference the idea that we all make up this system (ecosystem) that is CAPS…we contribute to it and we consume from it. In order to thrive, every system needs regular nutrition, regular contribution. We will, literally, cease to exist without it. Are you contributing as well as consuming? There are various ways to contribute to CAPS. Many of you choose a National or Chapter Board role, others jump in to help at National and Chapter events, and still others take on special projects. We all benefit from your nutrition and energy; and we are grateful to you! There’s another, new way to contribute to CAPS…and by contributing in this way, you are also adding value to your clients! If you were at the 2015 Convention in Ha ...

President’s Message: We Are One – June 2016
We Are One. It is the theme for this year at CAPS, and it is true no matter what year it is. We are one association of Experts Who Speak Professionally. If you were at your chapter event when I visited earlier this year, you know that I talked about CAPS (just like all human systems) as an ‘ecosystem’. In an ecosystem, the parts are interconnected by nutrient cycles and energy flows. In our association, we are intricately interconnected. The health and vitality of our association depends on the proper nutrition and energy being supplied by, and available to, all of our ‘parts’ (all of you!). You Matter! We need to know about and hear from you, in order for us to continue to ensure that this is the kind of association that you want and need. In an ecosystem, there is a sense of interdepende ...
Your CAPS Community Cares
Stress kills! …silently at first, and then, in very apparent ways. One of the prevalent causes of stress in our modern world is financial stress. This can be especially true for speakers who don’t have the predictability of a regular paycheck. When financial hardship strikes, your stress levels can go through the roof! This often begins a downward spiral that could lead to pessimism, at best, and depression at worst. Once a negative perspective takes hold, it’s hard to see your way out. No one seems to care. But then, you discover the CAPS Foundation Professional Speakers’ Benefit Fund (PSBF). This fund was put in place by visionary and caring individuals who foresaw the need for the CAPS community to look out for members who might face financial hardships through no fault of their own. Th ...
