Before I joined CAPS I had no idea where to turn and what to do next .. I was flying by the seat of my pants. Since connecting with like minded individuals at CAPS I have saved myself thousands of hours of work, and thousands of dollars! I can't believe I was in the business without CAPS! What CAPS has given me:
CAPS provides me a qualified network of professionals wherein I can have candid conversations about this business, because sometimes it can be very lonely. As important, I have a means to add more value to my clients by referring other CAPS members, which always leads to more business for me. Sid Ridgley |

ROI on My CAPS Membership – 200-500%!
Many times CAPS members – new or veteran – wonder if the expense of belonging to the association is worth it. Let me share five examples that illustrate how I can count actual dollar benefits I have received and lead me to conclude that I have seen a return on my investment in belonging to CAPS of 200% to 500%.
1. Monthly Voices of Experience cassettes – I picked up a tip in January of this year on how to help a potential client see the value in what I do. I used this approach within two weeks to book two full days of training with a new client;
2. Monthly Chapter Meetings – At a chapter meeting in the fall Shelley Rose Charvet did a presentation that really made me focus on the “tag line” that I had been trying to make better. In a brief conversation after the meeting she encouraged me in a direction that allowed me to come up with “I help people avoid “Death by PowerPoint” and other electronic sins”. This line immediately identifies potential clients and I have been booked by an association because of it;
3. Networking – When I spoke to the CAPS Halifax chapter, I had dinner before the evening event with Brad McRae and we started discussing a variety of topics. I have had dinner with Brad every time I am in Halifax since then and it was his strong encouragement that gave me the push I needed to finally develop products and doing so has added credibility and profits to my business;
4. CAPS Conference – After attending a session by Tom Antion at the 2001 conference, I started developing a new web site in earnest. Based on what I learned from that session (and other sources) has enabled me to build a web site that is popular and drawing potential clients to contact me;
5. CAPS web site discussion groups – Last year after doing some work in the U.S. the client asked me to submit forms to allow them avoid withholding taxes on my fee. I turned to the CAPS discussion forum for answers and within 24 hours had a great response from Bob Parker who also offered to talk to me on the phone and was a great help in clearing things up.
I haven’t even mentioned the great tips and ideas I have got from the So To Speak newsletter and the Professional Speaker magazine all of us receive on a monthly basis.
To get the highest ROI from your membership, here are my suggestions:
1) Listen to what others are doing successfully in their speaking business
2) Adapt the ideas to your own situation and
3) Test and Implement the ideas in your own speaking business
When it comes time to renew your CAPS membership, or if a potential member asks why they should join, just look at the ROI that is possible if you take advantage of what CAPS offers. Dave Paradi |

CAPS Member Benefits aka "Why You Must Join!"
I have been a member of CAPS and NSA since 1992 and have found priceless benefits since I joined. Not only do you belong to an association with hundreds of just really good people, you will fast track your career in the speaking and training industry. As a member, you are listed on the CAPS website and I have booked several engagements from just that one benefit. You also receive a monthly newsletter, CD and a speakers magazine. It is a great way to keep in touch with what's happening in the business. I live in a small city, which does not have a chapter and for me the resources have been a great lifeline to keep me in touch.
Bottom line for me though, is the friendships and collegial relationships I have established and maintained over the years. Unlike other associations, we are VERY supportive of each other's successes and help out with the bumps along the way.
If you are interested at all in getting involved in this business, I guarantee you will not be disappointed in becoming a member of The Canadian Association of Professional Speakers. Linda Edgecombe CSP Life Perspective Specialist Learning Edge Resources Corporation |
